uruguay- one of the safest countries in the world (our travel book tells us)... everyone drinks yerba mate and carries and thermos under-arm... beaches, soviet inspired architecture?, parrilladas and lots of mosquitos, first all nighter in a bus terminal (could've gone to a sex shop to pass the time), saw four condors the closest ever, dengue scare, change of president ceremony, end of carnaval, chilean ex pats trying to make andean music go international, dessert empanadas, toxic beach pollution? (dead conches, crabs, fish- all uneaten on the beach), scott goes swimming, death/decomp process in vivo on baby sea lion, amazing lightning storm, jetson bus, guards with shotguns pacing, guarding the bank, dead dog in the street, delicious salad, domestic violence police unit, free healthcare...

quick story- waiter at our table. wants to know if everyone in america carries a gun? has one in their house? has more than one? wants to know if there are a lot of serial killers in our state? if we know any? if children normally bring guns to school? won't take any thing less than a sensational response because you know... he saw this show on TV...
